Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day as we know it, is an annual holiday celebrated on February 14. Each year on February 14th, many people exchange cards, candy, gifts or flowers with their special “valentine.”  But do we know the history behind it. It originated as a Western Christian liturgical feast day honoring one or more early saints named Valentinus, and is recognized as a significant cultural and commercial celebration in many regions around the world. Let’s learn some interesting facts now. Valentine’s day is one of america’s biggest holidays. In Victorian times it was considered bad luck to sign a Valentine’s Day card. Many believe the X symbol became synonymous with the kiss in medieval times. People who couldn't write their names signed in front of a witness with an X. The X was then kissed to show their sincerity. In the Middle Ages, young men and women drew names from a bowl to see who would be their Valentine. They would wear this name pinned onto their sleeves for one week for everyone to see. This was the origin of the expression "to wear your heart on your sleeve." In 1537, England's King Henry VII officially declared Feb. 14 the holiday of St. Valentine's Day. Richard Cadbury produced the first box of chocolates for Valentine's Day in the late 1800s. Over 1 billion worth of chocolate is purchased for Valentine’s day in the U.S.
A teacher is most likely to get more cards, chocolates, candies than a student, friend, wife, husband, mom, or dad. Valentine’s day isn’t just to be celebrated with your boyfriend or girlfriend. It can be celebrated with friends and family. How do you celebrate your valentines day?

Arnold H. Glasgow
Student Success Statement

“In life as in football, you won’t go far, unless you know where the goalposts are.” This is a quote once said by Arnold H. Glasgow. This statement is trying to inform us that you won’t know how far you need to go if you don’t know where to stop. In football if someone is trying to score a point, they won’t know where they need to make it because there is no goalpost. They won’t know how far it is they need to go. Therefore they’ll keep running and running. For instance, let’s say you have a test and you keep answering questions but you don’t know where to stop because the teacher doesn’t tell you and you just keep going and going. You don’t know where to stop. I agree with Arnold Glasgow. I also found it interesting and I like how he put the words into perspective. He really knew how to change the words yet have the same meaning. I think that it really helps people understand more what he is trying to emphasize.

Chris Paul

Chris Paul was a high school basketball player. He loved his grandfather to death. His grandfather did so much for his family according to Chris. He even went to all of his basketball games. Even on work days. Then one day Chris’ grandfather died. He didn’t want to choose to believe that. Sadly, it was true. He was devastated. Days after he had a game. Chris didn’t know how he was going to play without his grandfather there in the audience. Then he reached out for his aunt for some advice. She suggested why not dedicate 61 basketball points to his grandfather indicating each year he was alive. And so he did. Chris Paul went beyond the 61 points. He almost reached the most basketball points done in one game. What an extrordinary story. Everyone should learn from this. He didn’t do this for rewards,or to be selfish. He did it to dedicate it to his wonderful grandfather.

Count Leo Tolstoy once said ‘’Only those live who do good.’’ This quote is trying to inform us that if you do wrong in life you won’t live long enough. You won’t enjoy what. If you do good, good things will come. For instance, let’s say that you go out to the streets and decide to feed the homeless. Life will repay you by living longer. You don’t leave this world without repaying for the things that you have done wrong. This is why I agree with Count Leo Tolstoy. “Only those live who do good.’’

A Choice: Poverty or Prosperity

Dr. Ben Carson once said “I hated poverty. Poverty is more of a choice than anything else, and I can change that (poverty.) It depends upon how hard I want to work, and I decided that I would change it.” Ben Carson was once a poor child. He or his family didn’t know to read. He was the worst in his class. He always wondered why everyone knew the answers to every question in class. But one day he decided he wanted to change that. He read books while everyone was having a good time outside playing. He wanted a better future for himself. He didn’t like the poverty so did something about it. He knew he could come out of it if he worked hard for it. So he did. This is a very inspiring quote. I think everyone should live by it. Ben Carson shows us by example that it is possible to do anything you want if you truly believe you can do it and work hard for it.
